Sinclair and Girnigoe Castle painting

The history of Sinclair & Girnigoe Castle is slightly unclear. Dating back to at least the late 15th Century, there is still debate about its foundation as evidence has been found placing the ruin as far back as the 1300s.

The castle sits on a spur of rock (accessible from the mainland) jutting out into the North Sea. While a ruin, you can get a clear sense of its size and scale as well as what it must have been like to live so close to the elements over 500 years ago.

Entry is free and the site is well sign-posted with excellent information points as you walk around.

Please take note of the warning signs - the site is not fully secured in places and needs protecting from further damage too (e.g. from climbing on the walls).
